Explore the Rich History of Oldmeldrum
Oldmeldrum (known locally as Meldrum) is a small town in Aberdeenshire. Just 18 miles northwest of Aberdeen City, Meldrum has a population of just under 2500. Surrounded by rolling farmland the town has pictureseque views over the surrounding countryside. To the south lies the Bennachie hill range, a popular walking and hiking area. The town is traditionally centred on farming and also boasts a distillery and a selection of engineering businesses mainly serving the agricultural and energy sectors
Glen Garioch Distillery was established in 1797 and produces some very fine single malt whisky.
The Battle of Barra (1308) was fought on land just outside the town and was a victory for the Scottish king Robert the Bruce over his chief domestic enemy, John Comyn, 3rd Earl of Buchan.
Oldmeldrum Sports and Highland Games has been held in the town every year since 1930
