Former Meldrum Academy pupil Graeme Penny recieved the prize for the RGU Best Built Environment Stage 2 Student from Dean of Faculty of Design and Technology Professor John Watson.

An Oldmeldrum student has recently scooped up a top award for his academic performance at Robert Gordon University (RGU).

Former Meldrum Academy pupil, Graeme Penny, 23, is currently studying a surveying course at the university and was awarded the prize for the Best Built Environment Stage 2 Student at a special awards ceremony which recently took place.

At the ceremony Graeme received his award from Dean of the Faculty of Design and Technology at RGU, Professor John Watson. Graeme is now in his third year of the Surveying course at RGU’s Scott Sutherland School of Architecture and Built Environment in the Garthdee Campus.

Commenting on his award, he told the Times: “It is fantastic to be recognised by the university in this way

“Second year was an exciting time with all the new areas in the construction industry that I am being introduced to.”

After leaving Meldrum Academy, Graeme studied to become an apprentice joiner at North East Scotland College. Graeme said: “During my final year the college had a lecture about further education and that is when I applied to RGU to study Surveying. I work for my family’s construction company and they are supporting me through my degree and help me balance my studying and my work.”

He added: “Being from a construction background has helped me a lot through the course, when it comes to building technology.

“The other modules such as procurement, estimating and measurement have been an exciting challenge for me to learn about new areas of the construction industry,” he added.
