Meldrum teen to sing at Open Mike

A MELDRUM teenager has set her sights on getting through to the National finals of the Open Mike competition after earning a place in the Regionals.
Mary Wilson (15) will head to Glasgow later this month to sing for a coveted place at the London Finals next January.
Mary told the Herald: “I want to go on to have a music career, ideally as a music coach – I want to be in the music industry.
“I have always wanted to be a singer but it’s a hard industry to get in to. My ultimate ambition is to build a music school because I like to teach people that enjoy music as much as I do.”
Mary, who hopes to go to university to gain a degree in music as well as teaching, will have three-and-a-half minutes in which to wow the judges at the forthcoming competition.
Recalling the initial performance at which she sang the Brandi Carlisle song ‘That Wasn’t Me’ she said: “I’ll sing ‘Angel’ by Sarah McLachlan.” After confessing that she got really nervous, she added: “Singing in front of the judges was nerve-wracking and I get especially nervous when I’m singing in front of people I know. I never told anyone at school that I sang but now they’ve found out and they’ve been really supportive. It’s all really, really exciting.”
The winner of the National competition will fly to Dublin to make an album, something that Mary aspires to. She said: “I would love to record an album and I’d love to wake up each morning and know I’d be doing music all day.”
Emeli Sande and Adele are currently some of Mary’s favourite singers. She said of Emeli: She has done so much – I look up to her and she was awesome to watch at the Olympic ceremony.“
