Meldrum Sports – Sat 17th June

Now that Sandy Manson, Lord Lieutenant of Aberdeenshire has the celebrations of the King’s Coronation out of the way, he can return to the important business of officially opening the 93rd Anniversary Oldmeldrum Sports & Highland Games on Saturday 17th June 2023!

We are delighted that Sandy has agreed to come and open the Sports, so that we can acknowledge his fantastic achievements. Sandy was brought up, and still stays on the family farm little more than a stones throw from the Pleasure Park where he will perform the opening. His late father Akki was a past Chairman of the Sports Committee too.

After performing the role of deputy lieutenant for many years he was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Aberdeenshire in 2020. The Lord Lieutenant is the Monarch’s representative in the area. He has had to perform various duties in his role meeting with members of the Royal family when they are visiting and more symbolically following the death of HM the Queen at Balmoral last year and in the King’s coronation.

We will have all the usual events including the massed pipe bands, heavy and light events and highland dancing. The Meldrum 5 miler and kids race

We have the wrestlers from Wrestlezone back in the Marquee this year along with Divine Magic and photographic displays by Meldrum & Bourtie Heritage Society. In the arena there will be a display of Kung Fu and Chinese Lion Dancing from Yee’s Hung Ga.

There will be loads of trade stands and the funfair at the top of the park as usual.
