Oldmeldrum strives for Ambitious Projects

The Community of Udny near Oldmeldrum – in 2011 have pioneered a community owned wind turbine raising £100,000 a year for local projects.

A number of groups within the Community of Oldmeldrum are looking to start up projects that will benefit those living in the area. As a result of the recent housing developments within Oldmeldrum there is over £200,000 of planning gain money available. The groups are looking for funding from the planning gain to assist or start up these projects.

Projects include a Community Wind Turbine. The group aim to set up a project similar to the Udny Community Wind Turbine which generates electricity that is sold to the grid. All profits are fed back into the Community. A turbine has the potential to generate a surplus of tens of thousands of pounds per year. These funds could support Community projects for up to 25 years.

Another group, Meldrum Park Users group, are putting plans together to improve the facilities at Oldmeldrum Pleasure Park. This could include improving the drainage, updating or redeveloping the pavilion and improving the tennis courts.

It has been recognised the Community would benefit from improved and additional paths in and around the town. Meldrum Core Paths Group are looking at areas where paths can be put in place for the enjoyment of all.

The groups are seeking the Community’s views on these and other projects and will be holding a drop in public engagement event to be held in Oldmeldrum Townhall on Saturday 8th December between 10am and 2pm.
